Who is the next target?
Val Banks is an attorney who avoids courtrooms and crime scenes. She works from home, a cocker spaniel under her desk. Then an attorney she works for calls: a state representative's campaign manager has been shot dead in an Akron alley. Val's quiet life gets turned upside down.
For double her usual fee, Val agrees to go into the fray and undercover to investigate the Second Amendment Blood Covenant, an armed
militia that has been protesting outside the representative's office.
At the first meeting, the militia conducts routine business, drinks coffee, and laughs about the shooting. The next week, the militia's guest of honor is an evangelical pastor running to ban books and take over the statehouse.
But Val's cover is thin. When the militia turns on her, Val has to fight for her life and the truth.
Can she catch the killer before there is an uprising?
Or will Val be silenced first?
